HPV Virus Cervical Cancer And The Gardasil Vaccine

HPV virus (Human Papilloma Virus) is a group of over 100 viruses, that affect skin cells and mucous membranes in humans. There is an association between being infected with these viruses and developing cervical cancer. Some strains of the virus also cause genital warts and may increase the risk of developing oral and anal cancers.

HPV was first discovered when researchers noticed that the only group of women that did not develop cervical cancer were celibate nuns. A sexually transmitted cause of cervical cancer was hypothesized, and research discovered the family of viruses.

Most women that contract the virus are able to clear it from their body within 1-2 years. If you cannot clear the virus, or have ongoing exposure to it, over time the virus can cause normal cells to turn cancerous, both in the cervix as well as the vagina. Pap smears not only can detect cancerous and precancerous cells, but can also detect the presence of the HPV virus.

Gardasil is a vaccine that helps your body to defend against 4 strains of HPV. Types 16 and 18 are associated with cervical cancer. Types 6 and 11 are 2 strains that cause genital warts. The vaccine is over $200 per dose and requires 3 doses. Not all that start the series finish it, either because of cost issues, side effects or non-compliance. The overall effective rate of protection from cancer is probably less than 50%, and may be as low as 17% if all that start the series, but do not complete it are included. Also one must remember that there are other strains that can cause cancer, that are not in the vaccine. It is recommended for girls as young as 11, up to age 26. It is now also recommended for boys, with the theory, that if HPV is decreased in boys and men, that the rate of infection in women will decline. There is some weak data that says that anal and oral cancers in homosexual men may decrease from the vaccine.

There is a push in many states to make this a mandatory vaccine. I think the long term data is not known, the actual benefits are probably much less than that reported, and the possibility exists, that if by some way we eliminate types 16 and 18, that another strain may become the new prevalent strain, and could be as bad or worse. What if there were 100 strains of small pox, and our vaccine prevented only 4 strains? Isn't it reasonable that another strain may emerge?

We have a wonderful way to prevent cervical cancer, already. The pap smear. Yet, we used to recommend your first pap at age 18, or when you became sexually active. The new recommendation is now age 21, regardless. Why is that? Money. The rationale is, it may take 3-5 years of infection before there are pap smear abnormalities, so lets turn a blind eye when someone is having unprotected sex at age 16. Don't do an exam, don't educate, let them get HPV, and worry about it later. On a similar note (rant to follow)!…very quietly, under president Obama, the starting age for mammogram was moved from age 40 to 50. Why? Because it cost too much money to save the lives of women in their 40s who developed breast cancer. There aren't enough to justify the cost. When there was an outrage over this recommendation, it was rolled back to 40.

If you think Obama care and universal healthcare wont have rationing and worse services for the majority, think again. When the government tells you that your 11 year old daughter can't go to school unless she is vaccinated for HPV. Or that you must give your infant the Hepatitis vaccine because the government doesn't know if they will grow up to be an IV drug user, or when a new lung cancer drug is prevented from coming to market, because it is $50,000 more than existing therapy, and "only" improves survival by 6-12 months over existing therapy. Beware.

  1. In Australia there is a government subsidised scheme for a free full course
of HPV vaccinations in all schools for 12-13yo Male and Female students. .
That assures shat vast majority of students are vaccinated before they
become sexually active and have the vaccination when otherwise they would
be very unlikely to be bothered to pay many hundreds and book an
appointment. It is actually a good investment since it is preventative so
public health system doesn’t pay down the track when people develop
cervical cancer. So really it’s a win-win situation! Hopefully long term we
will see a large drop in cervical cancer because of this!

    1. +Alex Delaney Its a win-win, children are dying, teenage females are having
failing ovaries and entering menopause IN THEIR TEENS. The ones who don’t
die are having life long pain issues, neurological issues, and autoimmune
disorders. Go Australia! Remember nothing is free mate, there are hundreds
of HPV strains yet the vaccine only covers 4 and immunity is not
guaranteed. An annual pap test is 99% effective against cervical
cancer. Do some research before you ruin your kid. Your first sentence
made the most sense- it is a SCHEME.

    2. You don’t really get much choice, in my state they’re getting no jab no
play policies which will likely roll out to that. I’d say it’s much better
to avoid the virus spreading while it’s still in low numbers, I might say
there hasn’t been many issues with it, I’d say the chance of getting these
people to have a regular pap test are very low. Obviously as was said in
this vid it is not perfect, but I mean it’s better not to have men
spreading it. Having said that ti would be nice if people would change
their behaviour but that’s just how it seems to go The benefit for men isn
minimal for cost, it mainly prevents the spread. If you have the vaccine 3
times before being sexual active it’s probably going to be beneficial. I’m
not so sure about taking all powers from parents for absolutely any vaccine
tho, I think there’s a clause so you can see a GP and they will establish
the risk because some people will have a reaction we know that, the trouble
is in haste people get the vaccinations without assessment. Having said
that for now at least free GP visits so maybe that’s a good thing. Trouble
is with unprotected sex to multiple partners comes many issues, we’ve had
low numbers in the past but it’s growing unfortunately. Very different
healthcare scheme here to the u.s. which basically means govt. foots bill
for whatever happens to you so I’d say that’s more what drives it. So if
you end up with most things you go to public hospital they foot bill, you
drink and drive they actually pay victims their normal wage plus money for
a carer so it’s just a different system. I’d a free it’s probably better if
they got their gp to approve first, my sister got very ill a long time back
when she was a teen because of a vaccination so GP exempted her from
certain ones, altho one she’s had to have for employment in health services
sector she didn’t react to because they have adapted some to have less of
the impurities that can cause issues. Really we don’t want hpv spreading
and causing cervical cancer so that has to be weighed up, look yes everyone
getting pap tests would be nice for more then just this but people just
don’t bother, there’s not much to be done about that on a govt. level.

    3. Over 80% of the population has this virus, yet less than one percent gets
cervical cancer. People are dying, teenagers having their lives ruined if
they live through the vaccine regiment. Many of the ingredient in the
vaccine are cancer CAUSING not to mention now after a few years they are
realizing that they have become sterile post-menopausal before they even
get out of their teens. Its a typical snake oil scam and if people educated
themselves they would realize this. Please do some research and in fact, do
not know a single woman who does not get an annual, even if you don’t have
insurance its free in many countries. Many case of this virus cures itself
in a year. Just keep getting your flu shot and eventually the brain damage
will prevent you from caring about the lives these vaccines ruin. Please, I
don’t want to argue, please educate yourself on this vaccine, it is
horrific. Even the placebo was not a true placebo they tested the vaccine
against bio-available aluminum a soft metal like mercury which has the
same toxic neurological effects. So only 1% get this cancer- one percent of
one gender, is it worth sterilizing your children (if they don’t die or
suffer debilitating neurological effects) over a one percent that MAY get
something? Condoms and safe sex with fewer partners kills no one, but I
guess they figure teens are just too stupid to play safe so why not kill
them or sterilize them. Hell if there are no people left then yes we can
      eradicate many diseases. WIN-WIN
